- Description:
- This is a cast of a bust of the Ludovisi Ares type housed in the Glyptothek in Munich. The figure turns his head to his right and looks ahead calmly with deep-set, thick-lidded, almond-shaped eyes. His nose is long and his lips are full and parted. The face is youthful and idealized. Ares' hair is short and curly. The rough, weathered surface of the original is reflected in this cast and is particularly evident on the forehead and hair. This cast preserves restorations that have since been removed from the original, most notably to the nose, left cheek and ear, and chin. The bust to which the head was attached, as here, has also been removed from the original. The limited bust does not include shoulders or pectoral muscles. Cast mold seams are visible. This figure is identified as a boxer in the Sage catalog, perhaps because of the cauliflower-like right ear. While generally accepted as Ares, the identity of the Ares Ludovisi type has been debated, as has the sculptor of the (probably) 4th c. original.
