Kent State Shootings, Kent, Ohio, 1970 - Image View Description:
- Partial Elevation - Wall+Steps+Memorial Columns
- Description:
- Design a memorial for the four students who were killed by Ohio National Guard soldiers during a mass, student protest on campus in 1970. The site was a wooded knoll at the end of a large, central, common green area on the Kent State campus.
The intent of the design was to create a garden of elements that depicted the tragedy of the massacre that occurred on the campus. The design focused on a long formidable ‘garden wall’ separating the common green area from the wooded knoll. The wall represented the confrontation, and was punctured by a series of ordered openings representing gun sights. Behind the wall stands a series of freestanding fragmented piers that represent individual Ohio National Guard soldiers. [The ‘presence’ of the soldiers was used to illustrate the fine line between students and soldiers.] The wall was penetrated by four large openings with stairs leading through the wall to four standing wall segments at the top of the wooded glen. The four lighted wall segments were inscribed with the names of the four individuals who were killed. All elements were constructed of cut gray and green granite stone. - Format:
