- Description:
- Exeter College's "17th-century chapel was demolished in 1856 to make way for one designed by George Gilbert Scott, which he loosely modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Far too big for its surroundings, the new chapel is a typical and enjoyable piece of high Victorian self-confi dence. The memorable interior is lavishly decorated with mosaic, brass and wrought iron. Its fittings include stalls by Bodley, a stone screen and organ gallery, and a large William Morris tapestry, The Adoration of the Kings, designed by Burne-Jones. Morris and Burne-Jones became undergraduates at Exeter in 1853, both intending to enter the Church
but inspired by Ruskin, Rossetti and the medieval splendours of Oxford they rejected conventional careers and dedicated themselves to art." Source: Oxford Tour site, http://193.123.31.186/exeter.html - Source:
