- Description:
- This is a duplicate of 15/5/3090.00633. "The 75-ton fountain, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, played a prominent role in early Detroit. It honors John Judson Bagley, a Detroit businessman and Michigan's 16th governor. On his death in 1881, Bagley willed the city $5,000 for a pub lic fountain to provide 'water cold and pure as the coldest mountain spring.'" The fountain was dedicated in 1887, and has been moved around the city several times. (Source: Detroit News, Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999) The original Detroit Opera House, built 1869, is visible in the background. It was destro yed by fire in 1897. This a nice early view of the Campus Martius, in downtown Detroit. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, visible in the background, "commemorates the 14,823 Michigan servicemen who were killed in the Civil War. The 60-foot monument was unveiled April 9, 1872....Sculptor Randolph Rogers designed the four-tiered monument. The armed female figure at the top represents Mi chigan shielding and defending the rights of her citizens and nation. Below her are four figures representing Victory, Union, Emancipation and History. At the lower stage are seven-foot bronze statues of an infantryman, a cavalryman, an artilleryman and a sailor. Four plaques depict Abraham Lincoln, Gens. William T. Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant, and Adm. David G. Farragut. Four 'screaming' eagles on pedestals surround the base." (Source: The Detroit News, )
