- Description:
- "Chicago's early interest in painting resulted in the Art Institute on Michigan Avenue (at right), one of the most successful Romanesque designs by the internationally known architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root. After its opening in 1885, it was the scene of trail-blazing exhibitions of the work of the French Impressionists. When the Art Institute moved across Michigan Avenue in the 1890s, its old home became the august Chicago Club. The building collapsed in 1929 during remodeling."
