Modified grid plan with long narrow blocks on markedly sloping site. Concealed andrones following slope line Sloping market Sq made construction of terrace necessary later. Unique in character with 3- 4-5 story buildings facing narrow streets and lanes. 19th century market building built beyond E end of church. 13th century bridge leads across River to modern riverside walk and strip park.
