Possibly the earliest town than can be accurately called a bastide. Level site on land well above the river Tarns with square with arcaded shops. Apparently substantially re-planned ca. 1270. Spacious market square has 13th century fountain constructed of lead. Fortified church of 14th century origins. (ruelles)
