- This model demonstrates how to transmit motion from one axis of rotation to another non-parallel axis of rotation in the same plane. The mechanism uses intermediate pulley wheels on a vertical axis perpendicular to the plane of the other two axes. Reuleaux called these devices 'tension organs'. Belt and pulley systems were used extensively in 19th and early 20th century factories to distribute power from a centralized steam or large electric motor to work stations throughout the factory. Today cable-pulley systems are found in cable-car and ski-lift operations in mountainous areas especially in Alpine Europe. A special feature of the belt and pulley mechanism is the self-centering property of the belt to remain on the pulley without side plate guides. This is accomplished by designing the pulley wheel to have crowned surface such that the belt will always move to the larger diameter in the center of the pulley when the belt is moving. The 220 models in Cornell University’s Reuleaux Collection were built in the late 19th century to demonstrate the elements of machine motion, as theorized by the German engineer Franz Reuleaux. The University acquired the models in 1882 for use in teaching and research. The Reuleaux models are classified according to the alphanumeric schema employed in the catalog of the manufacturer, Gustav Voigt. The letter in a model's ID (e.g., B14 or S35) refers to a class of mechanism; the number is a specific instance of the class. This classification scheme is a simplified version of the taxonomy of machine elements elaborated in Reuleaux's work. - Repository:
