Notes:
This small map is unusual in that it is persuasive both as to the progress in school segregation between 1954 and 1960 ("How Far We Have Come") and as to the lack of progress ("and how far we have yet to go"). The areas in black are the counties "in which integration has taken place," mostly in the border states, Oklahoma, and parts of Texas. There appears to be not a single county in which school integration had occurred in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Caroline, or those parts of Florida north of the metropolitan Miami area. Cornell University Library is pleased to present this digital collection of Persuasive Maps, the originals of which have been collected and described by the private collector PJ Mode. The descriptive information in the “Collector’s Notes” has been supplied by Mr. Mode and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cornell University.
