- This detailed street map is the centerfold of the "San Francisco Hall of Shame Action Handbook," issued to support a planned protest demonstration in 1982 against numerous "nuclear corporations" in the city's financial district. To the left and right of the map is a "Tour Guide Preview" listing the names and addresses of ten prominent targets of the protest. There is a short paragraph for each, describing its role as a "nuclear investor," "uranium miner," or builder or operator of nuclear reactors or other facilities. A legend lists the 12 categories of firms targeted, including accounting and law firms.
The protest was organized by the Abalone Alliance, a group formed in 1977 and mobilized to fight the completion and operation of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power facility in central California. After a series of protests in the late 1970s, the Alliance organized a 20-day "Blockade/Encampment" that disrupted the facility's site in September 1981. This massive action involved tens of thousands of people and led to some 1900 arrests.
After this event, a large group of Alliance members from San Francisco began to focus on the Bay Area, including the Livermore Laboratory nuclear research facility east of the city. The cover of the Hall of Shame Action Handbook set February 16 for the financial district action, but that date was crossed out and March 22 inserted in purple ink (or overprinting). It contains articles, items on the planned protest, and other information useful to participants like what to do if arrested. It is stated to be a "Supplement" to the more detailed Abalone Alliance 1981 Diablo Canyon Blockade/Encampment Handbook, to be handed out to demonstrators.
The action took place as scheduled on March 22, 1982, and was reported in the Alliance's newspaper. "Hall of Shame Tour 1982," https://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=Hall_of_Shame_Tour_1982, accessed March 25, 2023. A total of "52 members of the Hall of Shame" were "visited," including virtually all of 11 "chosen by affinity groups and organizations as targets for direct action." Four demonstrators at two businesses (Union Carbide and Pacific Gas & Electric) were arrested, charged with "failure to leave a business when asked," and spent a night in jail.
A similar action was mounted on October 24, 1983 by an affiliated organization, the "Livermore Action Group" - using the same map! https://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=Bringing_the_War_to_Downtown_San_Francisco_1983, accessed March 25, 2023.
For a somewhat similar map of Vietnam War-era defense contractors, see ID #1382, "University of Calif. Berkeley Defense Contracts" (1971).
