Elephants as pets - Measurement:
- 12 x 27 (centimeters, height x width)
- Description:
- A pair of nearly identical photographs for viewing the depicted image in three dimensions with a stereograph viewer. The images look down a road at dozens of people gazing at an elephant holding a person in its trunk. The elephant is on the right side of the image, facing the viewer, standing on its back legs, holding a person off the ground in its trunk. The person being held has their legs out rigidly and is holding the trunk with one arm; the other arm is up toward the elephant's ear. A thin, dark-skinned person holding a long stick stands next to the elephant, looking at it, in the middle of the road. The road is bounded by huge trees into the distance, and is lined with people of all ages in sarongs and white tops watching the elephant. The verso is pictured below the recto and includes text about the beauty of Ceylon (n.b.: now Sri Lanka) and the role of elephants in work there, with colonialist sentiments.
