Notes:
This chart is an homage to empire. It maps in comprehensive and massive detail the genealogy of the rulers "of the States and Empires of the World" from the birth of Christ until the early 18th century. In the center is a small map of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East entitled "Map Showing the Location of the States and Empires of the Emperors, Kings and Princes Mentioned in this Chart." The universality of the states covered, and the number of their rulers over 17 centuries, send a strong message of imperial and monarchical inevitability and permanence.
This chart appears in volume 7 of Henri Chatelaine's "Atlas historique, ou nouvelle introduction à l’histoire, à la chronologie & à la géographie ancienne et moderne." The Atlas Historique was a massive work of 285 maps, views, plans, tables, and a number of genealogical charts such as this. Chatelain was a French mapmaker who worked in London and later Holland, where the Atlas Historique was published in seven volumes from 1705 to 1720. Cornell University Library is pleased to present this digital collection of Persuasive Maps, the originals of which have been collected and described by the private collector PJ Mode. The descriptive information in the “Collector’s Notes” has been supplied by Mr. Mode and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cornell University.
