- Description:
- Seated portrait of a young, morose-looking light skinned woman wearing a voluminous black dress with lace trim, in a golden arc mat and golden frame. The dress is so wide at the bottom that it covers the entire bottom of the image and forms a triangle with Mather's face at the pinnacle. Mather's hands are clasped on her lap, her face and hands are luminous and a soft light is coming from behind her right shoulder. The hand coloring is naturalistic: her skin is pale, but rosier at the cheeks and throat, and her hair is a warm chestnut. A table by her side is a crumpled pink satin, and the curtain to her left is a dark cerulean.
- Notes:
- Framed, hand-colored albumen portrait. Two other portraits of Anderson are held at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum as part of a family gift.
