- This 1982 map supported the FMLN guerrilla war in El Salvador, portraying it as "The Inevitable Revolution." Text on the map affirmed the progress of the rebels. The "Zones of Control" (dark red) are locations with "the most permanent guerrilla and popular activity ... Subject to frequent military offensives by the junta, most of which have proven unsuccessful." The "Zones of Expansion" (horizontal blue stripes) are areas where "there is increasing FMLN activity on a daily basis."
The map was published along with an English-language translation of a pamphlet providing an overview of the revolution, "Commander Ferman Cienfuegos Speaks." In his introduction (p. iii), Cienfuegos condemns "imperialism . . . the number one public enemy of Humanity," and concludes that "Sooner or later the forces of change will take power in El Salvador."
The FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front) was a coalition of left-wing guerrilla groups, originally united in October 1980. On the verso of the map is an organization chart of the group at that time, ID #1389.02. After the successful negotiation of peace in 1992, the FMLN disarmed and became a lawful political organization, now one of the major political parties of El Salvador (see http://www.fmln.org.sv/sv/oficialv3c/, accessed January 14, 2015).
