- Viscount Rothermere was a powerful London press lord ("proprietor" of the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and Evening News), a founder of the United Empire Party in 1930, and an adamant opponent of Indian self-determination. In November 1931, he wrote an article attacking Gandhi personally (a "grotesque figure
" "a discredited charlatan") and railing against independence: "To give self-administration to India would entail the same consequences - carnage and chaos- as if all the animals in a zoological garden were turned in to one large cage." (Milwaukee Journal, November 29, 1931, p.6, http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1499&dat=19311129&id=x7JQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=OyIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6685,1992697, accessed January 1, 2015).
The precise date of this publication is unknown, but was likely produced as an Indian rebuke to Rothemere about 1931. It purports to show a pamphlet by Rothermere, issued by his United Empire Party at its "Daily Mail" Branch in London. A picture of Gandhi sits astride the Indian subcontinent, gesturing toward a very small, faint image of Britain. The caption in English says "Diagram Indicative of the Area of India as Compared with That of Great Britain." The text below the image is in Gujarati, a regional language spoken by about five percent of the population of India. It says "Gandhi representing all of India in protest against Great Britain."
