- Notes:
- This reassuring newspaper map was published very early in the War, January 1940, before the Battle of Britain had begun in earnest. Noting the mining of the English Channel, the text says that "the Nazis must depend upon the effectiveness of Goering's bombers if they decide to launch a large-scale air attack. So far the nazi raiders have been shot down, one by one, by Britain's one-man fighter planes." The text emphasizes the speed advantage of RAF pilots over the German bomber fleet and the "secret of the 200 bullets fired every second by the Spitfire."
Because of the projection, distances further away from the viewer are foreshortened; for example, the distance between Dover and Calais (actually 20 miles) appears to be slightly greater than the distance from Berlin to Breslau (over 180 miles). This has the effect of making England looking more protected by a relatively wider Channel. For another example of this technique (see ID #1349 "Europe from Moscow").
Note that Russia is colored the same green as Germany, reflecting their alliance; the German invasion of the Soviet Union was 18 months away.
