- This cartoon describes the aftermath of the fight for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1884. The party was focused on Republican corruption, and Grover Cleveland, the reform governor of New York, was the frontrunner. Cleveland's principal detractors were his long-time enemies from Tammany Hall, Boss "Honest" John Kelly and Thomas Grady. Kelly organized his forces "to assail Cleveland with every combination of epithets they could wring from the English language . . . with enthusiasm." (Golway 2014, 138). A prominent supporter responded (in a line that resonates still) that those backing Cleveland loved and respected him "not only for himself, for his character, for his integrity and judgment and iron will, but they love him most for the enemies he has made." (Ibid. 139). Cleveland won the nomination and in the general election, the margin of victory was New York's 36 electoral votes. Without the help of Tammany, he carried the state by just 1,149 popular votes (Ibid. 140).
In this image, Kelly returns to the city. In a birds-eye-view looking south toward the harbor, Kelly has his giant thumb on "New York City," and he is "Still the Boss."
