- Notes:
- The collection includes a number of allegorical "roadmaps" intended to encourage the viewer to act in conformity with religious norms. See Subjects > Heaven and Hell. This allegorical map shows the road from Infancy to Glory - or to the hellish Gulf of Death - with the many detours and obstacles along the way. It bears some resemblance to John Bunyan's Plan of the Road From the City of Destruction to the Celestial City (see ID ##1038 and 1055), and the Kellogg Brothers were likely aware of Bunyan's work at the time. However, this map does not illustrate the events in The Pilgrim's Progress, and more closely resembles George Wright's 1775 "Journey of Life", ID #1025.
The Kellogg Brothers were prolific publishers of prints with offices in Hartford and New York; they were contemporaries and competitors of Currier and Ives. See generally Finlay 2009, ch. 2. (This print is not in Finlay.)
The British Museum holds a print with the same title and similar, but not identical, design, published 1842 by J. H. Colton in New York. There was also a larger print of the same name published in 1833 by James Nisbet in London. Both of these are described in Reitinger 2008, 52-57, and the Nisbet map in Baynton-Williams 2015, 128-29.
