Politics & Government
Slavery/Race - Measurement:

- Notes:
- An unusual perspective centered on West Africa, which is in the light, and contrasting the U. S. in the dark. Apart from geographic names, there are only two words on the map, "Indians" and "Slavery" both in the U. S. At the bottom is an inscription quoting Thomas Paine's, "The Rights of Man": "My Country Is the World; My Religion is to do good." This map is on the verso of "Moral Map of U.S."
Julius Rubens Ames was an accomplished artist and ardent abolitionist who died of tuberculosis in 1850, at age 49. (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=128137961&ref=acom, accessed January 27, 2015). "The Legion of Liberty and Force of Truth" is, as the full title suggests, an illustrated collection of poems, speeches and other writings by and about scores of individuals and institutions opposed to slavery, including (among others) religious figures, the founding fathers, British poets, prominent women, the press and the Bible. In an introduction, Ames says that the work is a "continuation" of his earlier "Liberty" pamphlets. See ID #2058.
