- Notes:
- This image from a 1714 Dutch emblem book shows the extent to which maps have been widely regarded as inherently trustworthy for more than three centuries. It is a portrait by Vincent Vander Vinne of a mapmaker looking up intently from his charts, one of many in the book highlighting biblical passages with poems and illustrations. See Raybould 2009, #14. The plate is titled “Thus Men Go Safely” (Zo gaat men veilig), and it is used to illustrate three biblical passages:
(i) "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me . . . " (Matthew xi, 29)
(ii) "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness . . ." (John viii, 12)
(iii) "I am the way, the truth and the life . . ." (John xiv, 6)
The identification of the image with these three passages, and particularly the third one, mark the mapmaker as someone to learn from, someone who can be trusted to shed light and avoid darkness, to show "the way, the truth." Living by faith, following the word of Jesus - like following a map - will lead you to safety.
