- Notes:
- The message of this very unusual map is bluntly summarized in the titles: there is a "Crisis in East Asia," and Japanese citizens should "Be Afraid!" Japan and its allies (shown in yellow) are virtually surrounded by enemies and potential enemies; the necessary line of defense is shown by a bold red "Horseshoe Shaped" circle. Five years before Pearl Harbor, this map is part of the process of conditioning the Japanese people to the necessity of war.
The various areas of threat are organized by color, and there are small inset photos of the principal leaders of each. The largest area on the map, colored red, shows the danger from the Communists, both Soviet and Chinese. There are photos of Stalin (to the far northwest), Vasily Blyukher (Red Army Far Eastern Command), Anandyn Amar (Prime Minister of Mongolia), Vladimir Tairov (Soviet Ambassador to Mongolia), Mao Zedong and Zhu De (Later Marshal of the PRC).
The large grey area is that of the nationalist Republic of China, the Kuomintang: Chiang Kai-shek, Li Zongren (Leader of New Guangxi clique, Vice President of ROC, high profile defector to PRC in 1960s) and Bai Chongxi (ROC Minister for Defence, fled to Taipei with Chiang).
In green is the area of "non-aligned" or "uncertain" forces: Prince Shakhdurzab (Warlord based out of Ningxia and Suiyuan, Mongolian aristocrat), Fu Zuoyi (Kuomintang general, of Central Plains War fame), Yan Xishan (Warlord of Shanxi, later Premier of ROC, fled to Taipei with Chiang), Song Zheyuan (Kuomintang general) and Han Fuju (Kuomintang general, Governor of Shandong).
Two heads of pro-Japanese forces are shown in the yellow areas: Prince Demchugdongrub (Leader of Mengjiang, Mongolian aristocrat) and Yin Ju-keng (Leader of the East Hebei Autonomous Government).
The map identifies a variety of relevant sites, including oil fields, manufacturing areas, flight routes, airports, railways, harbours, and important buildings, as well as local flora and fauna. The inset text provides detailed information about the illustrated geo-political situation, as well as a list of anti-Japan terrorist incidents in 1935-6.
