Xerxes I, King of Persia, 519 B.C.-465 B.C. or 464 B.C. - Image View Type:
- overall
- Image View Description:
- from front
- Measurement:
- 33 x 43.5 x 3 (centimeters, height x width)
- Description:
- This is a cast of a fragment of a cuneiform inscription in Old Persian from the Apadana at Persepolis housed in the British Museum. It includes four lines of text written horizontally, with each line separated by a thin inscribed line. The top of a fifth line of writing is also preserved along the bottom of the block. Sculpted borders at the top and right edges indicate that it is from the top right corner of a larger inscription. The inscription originally ran for thirty lines and was a dedication by Xerxes I to Ahuramazda intended to glorify both the god and the king and also to legitimate the king's rule.
