- Description:
- This is a damaged cast of a relief of four almost identical guardsmen from the Apadana at Persepolis housed in the British Museum. The draped guards face right (viewer's). Each holds a spear upright with both hands. In the original, the heads of the first and fourth figures, with hair and beards depicted in rows of tight curls, are almost complete. Here those figures are broken away from the shoulders up. Best preserved in this cast are the two central figures, both with damaged heads in the original. Figure two's chin and his mouth are preserved, along with the lowest portion of his nose. Figure three is missing the top of his head, but his face is intact. The original was cut irregularly from a larger wall composition. This cast was filled in around the edges to create a rectangle, although much of the fill has been broken away here.
