- This is a label intended to be glued to a crate of lemons, advertising the product in a colorful (and only a slightly misleading) way. The map of the Pacific shows various trade routes with Honolulu at the center, Asian ports to the west, and U.S. ports to the east. Superimposed over the map is a large lemon, filling almost the entire Ocean. The size of the lemon makes it appear that the fruit is quite close to Asian markets, notwithstanding the great distances of the Pacific. And the lemons in question came not from Hawaii but from the Johnston Fruit Company's orchards in California, first planted in 1875.
Crate labels of this kind were first employed in about 1880 to identify brands and make them stand out in public produce markets. This label was created in 1917 and no doubt reprinted from time to time. Because of the volume of sales, the print runs were often large, and unused labels like this one became collector's items. (Remnants of the glue are still on the back of this label, awaiting only a wet brush.)
For another interesting cartographic crate label, see ID #1106 (1900).
