- Description:
- Design a low-cost commercial building for merchandizing contemporary furniture and accessories. The building site was a portion of the downtown urban renewal area in Ithaca.
The design includes a pedestrian arcade along the street with related street trees. The arcade exposes the central interior furniture display. Exposure of the interior from the street is a transition through a series of linear layers – street/trees with brick pavers/sidewalk/concrete columns/arcade/glass with steel frame/display area/skylight/sales desk. Designed to merchandize contemporary furniture and accessories, the building’s concrete and brick exterior and unpainted concrete block interior offer textural contrast to the store’s content. Flexibility for displaying contemporary home furnishings is provided by varying the sizes and orientation of interior residential scale spaces. Stairs lead to a balcony display area and from which a bridge links the balcony to offices. A central skylight is the primary source of natural light and illuminates the central display area, the sales desk and the balcony above. - Format:
