- Description:
- Design a residence for the CFO and a Materials Engineer at Corning Glass Works. The plan was to include a primary central area for entertaining large numbers of guests. The design was to take advantage of a unique sloping site with distant views. The site exists under the primary flight path of commercial planes arriving at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport – the owners often were on the planes. Project not built.
The external rising circulation overlooked the entry garden and arrived in the primary living space. The space extended into the rear, terracing garden, and at the opposite end, a balcony overlooked the distant views. Aspects of the building design were influenced by formal and material qualities of an airplane. The overall design concepts involved the integration of the building spaces and forms within a garden of formal elements: an oblique and varying approach with controlled perspectival views, topiary, axial paths, a water channel, a bridge, a gate, a belvedere and terracing arbors terminating in a grotto. - Format:
