Design a cultural center that would include a theatre for the performing arts and an enclosed Memorial Auditorium for a variety of large spectator events.
The design included two individual buildings, one for the performing arts and a second for spectator events. The buildings were independent, identifiable entities, interrelated and designed to be constructed in two stages with interconnecting pedestrian structures. The buildings formed the edge of a dense urban fabric along the river with major parking facilities along the highway. The arts theatre was designed to focus on a major theatre space with a seating capacity of 1800 and a provision for reducing to 900 for smaller performances. The theatre accommodated opera, concerts, drama and dance. Many articulated, related, and auxiliary spaces surround and supported the theatre. A raised major circulation promenade/concourse overlooked the river and moved from the theatre entrance to the auditorium entrance and to the ground level. The auditorium with a seating capacity of 4500 accommodated spectator sports, such as hockey and basketball, circuses, exhibitions, political meetings, large entertainment events, revival meetings, and the like. It was spanned by a catenary roof structural system. - Format:
