- Notes:
- This publication from the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad is one of the "grandest" of the 19th century railroad promotional brochures. Unfolded, it stretches for more than four feet.
On one side (ID #2516.01) is extensive text promoting the attractions of Colorado. For the visitor there is "unsurpassed" sightseeing including ancient pueblos, old Spanish forts and cliff dwellings; "beautiful scenery;" "great mineral springs" with healing spas; and "abundant game . . . to the sportsman's delight." For the commercially minded, there is the "great wool market," "vast coal and iron fields," and Colorado's "famous silver mines" with "seething furnaces." Also on this side is a map of the company's rail lines, ID #2516.02.
On the other side (ID #2516.03) are nine beautiful chromolithographs of stops along the railroad's lines: Manitou, the Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge, Marshall Pass, Canon [sic] of the Grand River, the resort at Glenwood Springs, Toltec Gorge, Cathedral Spire and Castle Gate.
The brochure is undated, and versions of it were published well into the 20th century. However, this may be the first edition; while most editions describe the resort hotel at Glenwood Springs as if it were open, this one says it "will be opened June 1, 1893." (It opened on June 10.)
The work was produced by Knight, Leonard & Co. of Chicago, designers, engravers, and printers. Later editions of the map include credit to Poole Brothers of Chicago, a large commercial printer specializing in work for railroads.
