- Description:
- Newlands, Francis Griffith (1848-1917), Democratic Senator from Nevada, was the senior member of Congress on the Asian tour. He previously had been Nevada's lone Representative, from 1893 to 1903, as the candidate of the Silver Party. He was elected to the Senate in 1903 as a Democrat, when the silver issue became part of the Democratic platform. He served until his death in 1917. While in the House he was on the Foreign Affairs Committee, and in the Senate, on the Committee on Territories, as well as many committees such as: Public Lands
