- The Armenian genocide - the systematic deportation and massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire - began in the Spring of 1915. This map was published in preparation for the 50th anniversary of that event, along with a book describing Armenian history and detailing the genocide, "Le Deuil National Armenien" [The Grief of the Armenian Nation].
All of the symbols on the map are blood red. The double red lines with arrows show the principal routes of the caravans that deported Armenians to be massacred or to die in the desert. The single red lines with arrows show caravan stops where there were "searches, thefts, rapes and killings of deportees by organized gangs." The red dots surrounded by two circles indicate the control points for the deportations and massacres; those surrounded by a single circle mark the concentration and extermination camps. The oblique red lines at the center right of the map delineate areas where the inhabitants were saved and evacuated by the Russian Army.
The solid red circles represent, by their relative size, the total of those deported and massacred for cities, towns, villages and their surroundings. This map was derived from an earlier version, produced by Zadig Khanzadian in 1920 with each millimeter representing 5,000 Armenian men, women and children.
