- In 1896, the adviser to the Treasury, John McLeavey Brown, ordered the clearing of temporary booths and the widening of main roads to fifty-five feet. Until that time the streets were crowded with temporary booths and the stalls. The stall shown in the picture was one of the booths that had uniform looks and were erected on spare ground beyond the roadway. The shop to the left is selling glasses, scissors and other hardware articles, while the one on the right is selling sandals (among other items) and articles made of paper. Source: Pratt, Keith.
