- Portrait, etching "Artist's Proof no. 16 of fifty copies. J. Reich (1852-1923). Signed "Andrew D. White."
Jacques Reich, (1852-1923) was born in Hungary. He was a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau and Robert Fleury. He studied art in Budapest and at the Academy of fine arts in Philadelphia(1873). He was the artist of Scribner's "Cyclopaedia of Painters and Paintings," and the portrait artist for Appletons' "Annual Cyclopaedia" in 1886, 1887, and 1888 [“Bio: Reich, Jacques,” Art in Embassies, U.S. Department of State website, accessed http://art.state.gov/artistdetail.aspx?id=157792\]. In 1915, Cornell Professor George L. Burr wrote of this etching, ‘It gives me hearty pleasure to say that the portrait of Dr. Andrew D. White etched by Mr. Jacques Reich, of New York City, is an admirable likeness—the best I know of Dr. White. No Cornellian could wish a more satisfactory portrait of him.'
