- Professor Emeritus Dean Waldo Malott, sixth president of Cornell University (1951-1963). President Malott saw the expansion of the University post World War II. "He presided over a period of rapid expansion of the university in the post-World War II years. Under his direction, Cornell's budget grew from $42 million at the start of his tenure to $110 million, faculty salaries increased by more than 60 percent and growth in sponsored research grew from less than $15 million to more than $45 million annually"["President Emeritus Malott dies at age 98," Cornell Chronicle, (Ithaca, N.Y.), September 19,1996, Cornell University,http://www.news.cornell.edu/chronicle/96/9.19.96/malott_obit.html]. American artist Thomas Edgar Stephens studied at Cardiff University, Wales, the Heatherley School of Fine Art, London, and the Académie Julian, Paris. Stephens’ notable portrait subjects include United States President Abraham Lincoln, United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and General Douglas MacArthur, as well as other prominent government and military officials. His portraits can be found in the White House, the National Gallery of Art, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Pentagon, Walter Reed Hospital, and the West Point Military Academy.
