- Description:
- Laura, considered the muse of Italian Renaissance poet and humanist Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374). Petrarch wrote more than 300 Italian sonnets to Laura, as well as other short lyrics and one long poem. His most famous tribute to Laura are found in his Canzoniere which is divided into two parts, Rime in vita Laura (263 poems) and Rime in morte Laura (103 poems). Controversy over Laura's true identity or existence persists, although she is commonly identified as Laura de Noves. [Encyclopaedia Britannica. "Laura,"1994. Encyclopaedia Britannica Online.
