- Neal Dow Becker (1883-1955) lawyer and industrialist of New York City, Becker served as Chairman of Cornell University Board of Trustees (1947-1953). Becker received a Bachelors of Law’ in1905 and an Atrium Baccalaureates’ in 1906 from Cornell University. As a Cornell student, Becker participated in Glee Club, the class Football team, Delta Chi, and intercollegiate debate team [“Cornell-Pennsylvania Debate,” Cornell Alumni News, (Ithaca, N.Y), December 19, 1903, Cornell University Library, ecommons.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/25907/1/006_12.pdf]. After leaving Cornell, Becker founded the New York law firm ‘Kelly and Becker” with Cornell alumnus Charles E. Kelley (1904). At the time of his election to the Board of Trustees, Becker served as President of the Intertype Corporation (manufacturer of typesetting machinery), Trustee of Kings County Savings Bank, and Director of the New York Doch Company, among other notable positions [“Trustees elect two to fill Board,” Cornell Alumni News, (Ithaca, N.Y.), June 27, 1935, Cornell University Library, ecommons.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/27140/1/037_33.pdf]. This painting is part of a commemorating portrait series of past Chairman of the Cornell University Board of Trustees, located in the Willard Fiske Room of Uris Library.
Bradshaw Crandell is an American illustrator and portrait artist. In 1930 Crandell was a prominent illustrator of advertisements and popular periodical covers such as The Saturday Evening Post, American, Cosmopolitan, and Ladies Home Journal. During WWII Crandell produced a variety of war effort illustration art. Notable portrait subjects include Carole Lombard and Bette Davis.
