- "In memory of Andrew Dickson White, the ideal citizen, he served his state, his county, and mankind with whole-hearted devotion as senator, as ambassador of peace, commissioner in Russia, in Germany, at The Hague, but above honors by him attained he named his part in the founding of Cornell University
in the founding of that institution as a fostering mother of worthy membership, he realized the dream of his earlier manhood and among the last wishes of him possessed was that he be remembered as the originator of her educational powers, her broad intellectual outlook, her free unsectarian soul and her even-handed justice to men and women alike. Born in Homer, N. Y. November 7th 1832, died in Ithaca, N. Y. November 4, 1918. LL.D., Ph.D., C.C.L. Professor History, Michigan University 1857-63. Member New York Senate 1863-67. First Professor of Cornell University, of which he drew the charter, 1867-85, Trusteee 1867-1918. Minister to Germany 1879-1881, to Russia 1892-1894, Ambassador to Germany 1897-1902, President United States delegation Peace Conference at The Hague, 1899, Regent Smithsonian Institution, Member American Academy of Arts and Letters, Professor American Historical Assocation and United States Association, member Carnegie Institution Peace Foundation, Honorable Member Berlin Academy of Science, Order of the Legion of Honor." - Repository:
