- Description:
- "The chime of nine bells in this tower, on which are inscribed verses from Chant CVI of Tennyson's In Memoriam, is the gift of Miss Jennie McGraw 1868. The great tenor and clock bell is the gift of Mrs. A. D. White (Mary Amanda) 1870. It bears the inscription from Psalm XCII "To tell of thy loving kindness in the morning and of thy truth in the night season," and this written for it by James Russell Lowell:
"I call as fly the irrevocable hours
Futile as air or strong as fate to make
Your lives of sand or granite
awful powers. Even as men choose, they either give or take." Inscription, entrance to McGraw Tower. - Repository:
