- Inscription on clock reads: "Presented to Frederick A. Halsey March 31st, 1906 in appreciation of his labors in defense of established standards of measurements. 'The man and the hour' "Frederick A. Halsey (1856-1935) Cornell 1978. Arthur H. Dean Reading Room, Uris Library. Presented to Cornell University by the Halsey family in the 1970s. Cornell alumnus, Frederick A. Halsey' 1878 (1956-1935), was a mechanical engineer, economist and editor emeritus of the American Machinist (“HALSEY, Frederick Arthur.” 2009. Halsey authored several articles and books about engineering, particularly on the metric system (Halsey family papers, #2966. Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library). Halsey is best remembered for opposing the adoption of the metric system in the United States voted on by the House of Representatives in 1902-1906 (“HALSEY, Frederick Arthur.” 2009. Halsey is brother of historian, newsman, and Cornell alumnus Francis Whiting Halsey' 1973. The Halsey brothers were guest lecturers of the university in the 1800's.
