- Description:
- Former table of Cornell Professor Emeritus of Law John Harold Sherry (1902-1985) weekly visiting professor at the School of Hotel Administration (1936-1980). John H. Sherry of New York City was invited to come to Ithaca once a week to present a course about “Law of Innkeeping,” and later “Business Law.” At that time he was counsel for a number of hotels in New York City and for the American Hotel Association. His services were to be rendered without compensation. He accepted the appointed and continued as a guest lecturer without interruption until 1980. For twenty-five years he left New York on Wednesday night aboard the Lehigh Valley Railroad, later by plane when railroad travel was no longer available to Ithaca, and returned on Thursday night. The School of Hotel Administration established a scholarship in his honor. He was elected professor emeritus by the board of trustees on January 26, 1980 [“John Harold Sherry,”Cornell University Faculty Memorial Statement, accessed August 2, 2012, http://ecommons.library.cornell.edu/handle/1813/17813]. John Harold Sherry relinquished his teaching duties to his son Professor John E. H. Sherry. J.E.H. Sherry donated this table to the Nestle Library at the celebration of his 25th year with the Cornell School of Hotel Administration in 1981.
