- Description:
- Dale Raymond Corson, eighth president of Cornell University (1969-1977). Corson was a physicist and engineer and a recipient of Presidential Certificate of Merit (1948). He is attributed for the discovery of astatine, element 85 in the periodic table, and the introduction of radar into military operations during WWII. At Cornell, Corson worked from assistant professor of physics (1946) to President of the University. Corson's Presidency oversaw the university during the war of Vietnam, the civil rights movement, and the recession of 1970. This painting is part of a commemorating portrait series of past Cornell University presidents in the Arthur H. Dean Reading Room of Uris Library.
