- Description:
- Roswell Pettibone Flower (1835-1899), businessman and prominent Democratic politician, Flower was Governor of the State of New York (1891-1895), Congressman of New York (1881-1883), and Chairman of the Cornell University Board of Trustees (1897-1899). Governor Flower signed the legislation that chartered the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine as the first state-supported college at Cornell. On a visit to the Cornell campus following the funeral of Cornell Trustee William Sage, Governor Flower toured the Veterinary College and wrote a US $5000 check for the Veterinary Library, Cornell University's third library [Cornell University. 1960. Upon his death, an endowment for the library was donated by his wife in his honor. Today, the Flower-Sprecher Veterinary Library comprises one of the largest veterinary collections in the world. An active philanthropist, The Flower Free Surgical Hospital of New York Medical College, was named in his honor. At the time of its founding, The Flower Free Surgical Hospital was the first teaching hospital in the United States owned by a medical college [Metropolitan Hospital and Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals, About NYMC, New York Medical College website, accessed June 20, 2012, http://www.nymc.edu/AboutNYMC/History.html]. As governor, Flower signed into law the bills creating the Adirondack Park and the City of Niagara Falls [“Rosewell P. Flower,” Hall of Governors, New York State website, accessed June 20, 2012, http://www.hallofgovernors.ny.gov/RoswellFlower]. Flower was born on a farm and worked in a brickyard, mill, store, and on the family farm prior to becoming a successful businessman, banker and Wall Street tycoon. - Source:
