- Description:
- Hiram Corson (1828-1911), Cornell Professor and scholar of English. Corson formed part of the first faculty of Cornell University. Hiram Corson was born in Philadelphia, PA and recieved preporatory education in classics and mathematics. After working as a reporter in the US Senate and as a private secratary to Lewis Cass and Daniel Webster, Corson began his career in academia. He arrived to Cornell in 1870 where he soon became one of the best known faculty members [“Hiram Corson,”Cornell University Faculty Memorial Statement, Cornell University Library, accessed August 23, 2012, http://ecommons.library.cornell.edu/handle/1813/17813]. A quote from the announcement of his retirement in the December 1902 volume of the Cornell Alumni News summarized Corson's philosphy as a Professor: “As a teacher his appeal has steadfastly been directed to the hearts rather than the heads of his students. To touch the moral sense , to rouse some loftier conception of man and life and duty, to kindle some new ambition, -these have been his purposes. Of pure intellectuality, he is pursuaded, we already have enough” [“Professor Corson,” Cornell Alumni News, Cornell University, December 3, 1902, http://dspace.library.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/25871/1/005_10.pdf].
