- Description:
- This portrait of Liberty Hyde Bailey was painted in 1913 by Henry Salem Hubbell and is a sketch for a larger portrait, now reputedly in Prof. Wm Crepet's office. Bailey, born in South Haven, Michigan, studied at the Michigan Agricultural College (Now Michigan State University). Upon graduating he became the assistant to the famous botanist, Asa Gray. In 1885 he came to Cornell. He was a founder of the College of Agriculture in 1904 and became its first dean.
Henry Salem Hubbell was a member of the Giverny Circle of American Impresionists. He trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Academie Julian under Bouguereau, Benjamin-Constant and Laurens. In the winter of 1898-99 he studied at Whistler’s Academie Carmon in Paris. He became a member of the American art colony at Giverny as the result of a job offer and the influence of Frederik Frieske. - Repository:
