- Notes:
- This satirical map highlights the perils of speculation. Teeth Grinding Surf and the Sea of Despair wash on Cape Repentance and the Heath of Belated Awakening. The Swamp Without Scruples adjoins the Steppe Without Prospects. The Valleys of Imagination are overshadowed by the Mountains of Blindness. The Ruins of Prosperity sit in the Ill-Mannered Desert.
A version of this map first appeared in a remarkable six-volume work published by Franz J.J. von Reilly in 1801, a "Library of Jokes with a Satirical-Allegorical Atlas." Reilly's work was highlighted by a "General Map of the Moral World," ID #2457. The "General Map" identified nine Kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Speculation, each of which was the subject of an allegorical map published in the "Atlas." (Ibid. See generally Michael Buehler, https://bostonraremaps.com/inventory/reilly-allegorical-atlas/, accessed November 20, 2020.)
This map is one of six redrawn by Joseph Hesse, a Moravian engraver, and published in Karel Josef Jurende's annual "Patriotic Pilgrim in the Austrian Imperial State - A National Calendar for all Provinces of the Austrian Empire." Jurende's "Calendar" was more of an eclectic folk almanac of whatever might interest a wide audience: local history and culture, economic and political data, agriculture and natural history, ethnology, climate and meteorology, astronomical observations, literature, morality, religious views, music, humor, etc. This map (along with the redrawn Kingdom of Honor) appeared in the 1819 edition of the Calendar. The redrawn Kingdoms of Acquisition and Love were in the 1817 edition, and those of Knowledge and Power in the 1818 edition.
