- Notes:
- In December 1963, the then-powerful Committee on Political Education (COPE) of the AFL-CIO circulated a "Political Memo" (ID #2497.02) expressing alarm at the volume of right wing broadcasting across America. "Every week, in more than 500 communities, right wing propaganda is beamed into the homes of Americans over radio and television. In all, more than 6,000 rightiest messages are broadcast weekly - attacking the federal government, the Supreme Court, the United Nations, the public school system, labor unions, the civil rights movement, liberal groups and individuals." The Memo gave examples (e.g., "There are ample grounds for impeachment, not only of [Earl] Warren, but of all nine Supreme Court Justices") and set out COPE's plan "to offset" the impact of these messages.
The centerfold of the four-page Memo was a map (ID #2494.01) showing the locations across the United States of stations broadcasting seven such programs, each identified by a separate symbol. What matters on this map is not the specific geographic location of any broadcast, but the pervasiveness of the communications - their size, scope and dispersion. For other maps of this kind, see the Notes for ID #2304, Southern Poverty Law Center, "Active Hate Groups in the United States" (2017).
