- This large poster map provides the name, location, and size of some 1,100 villages destroyed in Israel before, during, and after the "Nakba," the Arabic word for "catastrophe" applied to the establishment of the State of Israel and the displacement of the Palestinian people in 1948.
It was published by De-Colonizer, a Tel Aviv-based "research and art laboratory . . . which aims to bring to a wider audience possible new academic-level knowledge and tools," to foster discussion and debate, "to change the discourses, . . . and to finally envision a shared life of equality and a peaceful cohabitation." The organization "envision[s] a future beyond the colonialist and racist regime, in which everyone living here will be equal. . . . Overcoming Zionism requires Israel to acknowledge the expulsion and destruction of Palestinians and their lives, and to redress that by granting refugees the right to return." https://www.de-colonizer.org/, accessed October 29, 2021. According to the organization, "Only entire communities destroyed (or about to be destroyed) are presented."
The map's legend explains the extensive use of symbols and colors: blue for 77 "Destructions before 1948," red for 821 "Destructions during the Nakba - 1948," and green for 206 "Destructions from 1967 until today." Virtually all of the villages destroyed are identified as Palestinian or Syrian, although 19 Jewish locations are described as destroyed before 1948 and another 26 in 1948. There are also 41 villages (shown in orange) described as "Jewish localities destroyed by Israel," the majority "to facilitate better control of the Palestinians."
On the verso (ID #2492.02), there is a detailed table of locations listed in alphabetical order and keyed to the grid of numbers and letters overlaying the map, permitting users to find the location of any village. The map and the table on the verso are in both English and French.
