- Notes:
- This unusual image is on the back cover of an 8-page pamphlet promoting the virtues of "Valentine, Nebraska. The Heart of a New and Unusual Region. A Place of Pleasant Surprises - A Land where Fortune Awaits You." At the top is a map of the state showing the location of Valentine, in Cherry County, "Home of a quarter of a Million Beef Cattle." The balance of the page is filled with text detailing "Valentine's Major Features:" scores of the city's recreational opportunities, educational advantages, fraternal organizations, shops and services. The text fills a shield in the center of the page, as well as an annulus around it, and the four corners of remaining space. Among many other things, we learn that Valentine has two bakeries, three dentists, four auctioneers, two piano tuners, eight lawyers, a tire shop, and a movie show. The city boasts of "A Community Spirit of FAIRNESS, Toleration, and Understanding in Law Observance and Enforcement," as well as an "Ardent GUN CLUB." The Chamber of Commerce is highlighted in the center of the page, along with the fact that Valentine is "Center of 3 Designated Highways." The balance of the pamphlet contains numerous photos and descriptions of scenic and recreational areas, "Fairyland Picnic Spots," and a nearby game preserve.
Valentine was founded in 1882 and named after Edward K. Valentine, then a Republican congressman from Nebraska who served as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee. The pamphlet is undated, but it states the city's population as 1800, and based on decennial census records, it was likely published in about 1931. That date is consistent with the city's shops and services, which include "Gas Filling Stations" and "Auto Liveries" along with "Blacksmith Shops" and "Harness Shops."
