- Notes:
- This large Chinese wall poster employs an unusual combination of persuasive mapping techniques to advance the assertion - still significant and controversial more than 60 years later - that "Taiwan is Part of the Sacred Territory of the People's Republic of China since Ancient Times!"
Mainland China and Taiwan are both colored exactly the same, and every geographical piece of information has been stripped from the map in order to prevent any distraction from the intended message.
Most importantly, the entire map is overlaid with a 20-century timeline and detailed claims regarding the relationship between Taiwan and China. Indeed, the earliest claim, at the top of the timeline, notes that the late Neolithic black pottery culture of the Yellow River valley areas of China some 4000 years ago has also been discovered by archeologists in Taiwan.
Other claims along the timeline include: the migration of ethnic Han to Taiwan during the period of Three Kingdoms (220–280 AD); the stationing of military troops and a high ranking military officer on the island during the Sui Dynasty (581-619 AD); the establishment of a garrison under mainland control during the 12th century; the installation of an "Agency of Patrol and Inspection" during the Yuan Dynasty (1335-1340); and the use of Chinese troops to ward off foreign invaders during the Ming Dynasty in 1563 and to institute a Prefecture on Taiwan (1661-1683 AD). Two dates notes on the timeline are not directly related to China or Taiwan: the discovery of America in 1492 and the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
