- This "General Map of the Moral World" is the cornerstone of a remarkable six-volume work published by Franz J.J. von Reilly in 1801, a "Library of Jokes with a Satirical-Allegorical Atlas." It appears in volume one of the "Atlas" and is followed by nine other allegorical maps in the remaining volumes, each describing in greater detail one of the regions specifically identified in the Moral Map: the City of Self-Love, the Kingdom of Love, the Kingdom of Acquisition, the Kingdom of Honor, the Kingdom of Power, the Kingdom of Knowledge, the Kingdom of Idleness, the Kingdom of Speculation, and the Land of Repose. (These translations and much of the following from Michael Buehler, https://bostonraremaps.com/inventory/reilly-allegorical-atlas/, accessed November 20, 2020.) The Moral Map includes many other geographic details, including the Goldmines of Hard Work, the Sea of Lasting Joy, and the (nearby) Sea of Despair.
The text of von Reilly's work is a "collection of anecdotes, jokes and amusing stories. . . . Taken individually the maps are clever and amusing, but the atlas as a whole is remarkably coherent, and its concept is executed with a level of thoroughness . . . not encountered elsewhere in the genre of allegorical cartography." Ibid. This map appears at the end of the first volume, followed by an eight-page "Explanation of the General Map of the Moral World," pp. 277-284.
Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (1766-1820) was a highly-regarded Viennese writer, mapmaker and publisher. In the late 18th and early 19 centuries, he published more than 800 maps of Germany and other European states.
