- Notes:
- This double-page map from the summer of 1965 is typical of public information supporting American involvement in the Vietnamese war at that time. The map uses enlarged asterisks to show the location of 11 U.S. Special Forces Camps throughout South Vietnam and identifies by name another 10 large U.S. bases. (The map uses stars to identify 14 "Assumed Vietcong Bases" in South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.) Vessels of a "U.S. Navy Assault Force" are pictured just off the coast near the border with North Vietnam, and in the south there are large images of a U.S. Kaman Helicopter and B52 bomber "based on Guam" - quite a contrast to the pictured "Junks Used to Supply Vietcong" shown at the bottom left.
It appeared along with an article by the leading pollster of the day, Louis Harris, headlined "Viet Nam War Gains Support." Harris reported that his polling "clearly indicates solid support for the commitment of U.S. military power to South Viet Nam" and "determination to see through a stepped-up scale of battle there . . . . As of now, the American people appear to be ready to commit whatever is required" to "prevent a Communist take over." Longview, Washington, Daily News, December 6, 1965, p.23.
